Background
The old entrance portal of the Schosshalden cemetery in Bern is made of stone and metal and is dated to around 1877. The cemetery itself opened in 1877 to replace an earlier rose garden, and at 16.8 hectares it is now the largest in the city. City records name no maker. Our sources do not document a link between the portal and the cemetery's opening.
