Art in Bern: artworks and galleries on a map

493 public artworks and galleries in Bern on one map, with stories in the blog and photos. Free, no account, no tracking.

Art in Bern shows the public artworks of the city of Bern on a map: fountains, sculptures, reliefs and murals, plus museums, galleries and art spaces. At the top you filter by period: until 1900, 1900 to 1979 and since 1980. Tap a dot to see the title, artist, year, material and place.

At the top, next to the language switch, you can switch from “Art” to “Buildings”, on large screens “Architecture & monuments”. The map then shows buildings and monuments of the city of Bern from the Bauinventar, the building inventory of the Canton of Bern, but only those with a free photo on Wikimedia Commons: orange worthy of protection, blue worth preserving, violet other cultural property such as fountains and monuments. Tap a dot to see the photo with the photographer’s name and the licence, the name, address and classification, often also the year it was built and the architecture according to Wikidata, plus the link to the heritage office’s object sheet. Sources: Bauinventar © Amt für Kultur des Kantons Bern (free use with source credit), Wikidata (CC0) and Wikimedia Commons.

Every work has its own page in the Bärn Kit blog, with photos and works nearby. For some we have written the story. “Art nearby” finds the closest work and the walking route.

A work or gallery is missing? Tap “Suggest a place”. You can add photos to every work. The photo is shrunk on your phone and loses its GPS data. Every suggestion and every photo is checked by hand before it appears.

The data come from Kultur Stadt Bern (open data “Kunst im öffentlichen Raum”) and OpenStreetMap (ODbL), photos from Wikimedia Commons with name and licence. They are reloaded every week. No tracking.
