Background

The sgraffito "Musizierende Engel" by Louis Moilliet, made from 1937 to 1939 on the facade of the funeral hall in the Schosshalden cemetery in Bern, is partly painted. Moilliet (1880-1962) was a Swiss painter and stained-glass artist, and as a schoolboy he met Paul Klee. He also received commissions for sgraffito work at the same cemetery. The cemetery opened in 1877 to replace an earlier rose garden.
