Background
“Wasserschloss” on Thunplatz in Bern is a monument of sandstone and other materials. It was built in 1911 as a memorial to the Baroque architect Niklaus Sprüngli, and it is also called the Water Castle. The facade of the library gallery, which Sprüngli had built in 1772–1775 at the end of Hotelgasse and which was demolished in 1909, was rebuilt here as the front of the monument. Water flows from three niches into a large curved basin. The lions beside it are works by Johann August Nahl the Elder and originally belonged to garden balustrades at Hindelbank Castle.
