Background
The bronze “Femme accroupie” by Henri Laurens (1935) stands in the Bremgartenfriedhof, Murtenstrasse 51, Bern, as the grave monument of Margrit and Hermann Rupf; this cast is numbered 2/6. Henri Laurens (1885–1954) worked as a sculptor in Paris, where he was born and died, and was close to cubism. Around 1930 he moved his figures away from their cubist structure towards rounded forms, influenced by surrealism. Hermann Rupf belonged to the important collectors of modern art in Switzerland. The Bremgarten cemetery itself opened in 1864 as a replacement for the Monbijou cemetery. Further sources on the making of the grave monument are not yet available.
