What this app does

Drinking fountains in Bern: map of every fountain

Every public fountain and water dispenser in the city of Bern on one map, with the way to the nearest drinking fountain. Free drinking water, no tracking.

Bern Drinking Water shows the public fountains of the city of Bern on one map. Green dots are fountains with drinking water, yellow dots are fountains where it is not known whether the water is drinkable, and red dots are fountains without drinking water. It also shows drinking water points such as outdoor taps and water dispensers that are recorded as drinking water in OpenStreetMap. When the page opens, only the green dots are switched on. You can show the other two groups with the “Drinking water unknown” and “No drinking water” switches at the top; the number next to each switch shows how many fountains belong to it.

Tap “Nearest fountain”: the app uses your location to find the nearest fountain among the groups switched on, shows the distance and calculates the walking route with the walking time. “Route” opens directions, “Route in OSM” shows the way in OpenStreetMap. Tap a dot to see its name and, where recorded, a description of the location and notes such as “wheelchair accessible” or “bottle refill”. On the map you will find, for example, the Schützenbrunnen, the Badgassbrunnen or the Henkerbrünnli on Neubrückstrasse. The sign at the fountain always comes first: if it says “Kein Trinkwasser” (not drinking water), do not drink, even if the dot is green.

The data comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL). A fountain counts as drinkable when it is recorded there with drinking_water=yes. For yellow dots: if in doubt, check the sign on the fountain. There is no tracking. Only the routing service routing.openstreetmap.de gets your location, and only the start and destination for the walking route. If a fountain is missing or a detail is wrong, you can correct it directly in OpenStreetMap.
