When is collection day? The waste calendar for your address

Does the bag go out today or tomorrow? Abfall Bern tells you when the city collects household waste, paper and cardboard and green waste at your address.

What is new?

Abfall Bern is a new app in Bärn Kit. Enter your street and house number, use your location or pick your zone. The page then shows the next collection day for household waste, paper and cardboard and green waste, an overview of eight weeks and the days with no collection because of a public holiday. With “Subscribe to calendar” the dates for your zone appear in your calendar app, with a reminder the evening before.

Why this app?

“When is collection day?” The answer depends on the zone, and hardly anyone knows theirs by heart: district A, B or C, with zones from A2 to C3. In districts A and B paper and cardboard are only collected every other Wednesday, in district C every Wednesday. On public holidays there is no collection and no replacement date. Miss it, and the paper stays with you for two weeks.

How it works

  1. Enter your street and house number and tap “Search”. Or tap “Use my location”, or pick your zone directly.
  2. See the next collection days for household waste, paper and cardboard and green waste, then the next eight weeks and the days without collection.
  3. Tap “Subscribe to calendar” and choose your calendar to get the dates into it (more below).

In districts A and B the waste has to be out by 7 am on collection day, at the earliest from 7 pm the evening before; in district C between 6 and 9 am. “Good to know” covers paper and cardboard, small bulky items, the bulky waste pick-up service and the recycling centres. Your device works out the zone, and your location stays on the device. Buildings with an underground collection point or central containers have no kerbside collection for that kind of waste; the city's address search shows whether this applies.

Getting the dates into your calendar

First choose your zone. Then tap “Subscribe to calendar”. A small menu opens; the option that fits your device is at the top:

  • Apple Calendar (iPhone, iPad, Mac): one tap, then confirm “Subscribe”.
  • Google Calendar (Android, web): opens Google Calendar in the browser; confirm “Add” there. The dates then also appear in the Google Calendar app.
  • Outlook: opens Outlook on the web with the calendar ready to add.
  • Download the file (.ics): for any other calendar app. A file is a copy and does not update itself.

A subscription updates itself: new dates, for example for 2027, arrive automatically. You can remove it at any time in your calendar app by deleting the calendar or unsubscribing. If you move, subscribe to the new zone and delete the old one.

Sources and thanks

Abfall Bern does not calculate any date itself. Everything comes from official sources that are reloaded and checked every time the website is updated. Our thanks go to:

  • Entsorgung + Recycling Stadt Bern: for the official waste calendar with the collection dates of every zone and the rules on putting waste out, paper, bulky waste and recycling centres. Thank you!
  • Geoinformation Stadt Bern: for the open geodata of the waste collection districts, from which the page works out your zone. Thank you for the open data!
  • swisstopo (geo.admin.ch): for the federal address search. It only receives the text you type. Thank you!

If anything differs, the City of Bern applies. The city has not published the 2027 dates yet; as soon as they are online, the page picks them up.
