Background

The bronze sculpture "Sitzende" by Bettina Eichin, dated 1989, stands in the Schosshalden cemetery at the foot of the "Schnegg" in Bern. Born in Bern in 1942, Eichin completed her training as a stonemason in 1964, the first woman in Switzerland to do so. From 1978 onward she worked mainly on public art, using bronze as her material. The cemetery opened in 1877 to replace an earlier rose garden and is now the largest in the city.
