Seasonal calendar Bern: vegetables and fruit

What is in season around Bern, month by month: vegetables, fruit, herbs, with a kitchen tip from the chef. Free, no tracking.

The Bern seasonal calendar shows which vegetables and fruit from the region are in season, month by month. It refers to open-field produce from the Bern region and the Swiss Plateau. A star marks peak season, the time when a product is cheapest and best.

At the top you choose a month; the current one is already selected. Below are three groups: “Vegetables now”, “Fruit and nuts now” and “From storage (regional)”. The last group lists foods such as potatoes, carrots, onions or apples when they come from storage outside their peak season. Tap a product and a kitchen tip from the chef appears.

In spring that means, for example, asparagus, wild garlic and rhubarb; in summer cherries, strawberries and tomatoes; in autumn pumpkin and quinces; in winter lamb’s lettuce, leeks and chicory. The tips are practical: tomatoes do not belong in the fridge, beans are poisonous raw and must be cooked, and wild garlic is best bought at the market, because it can be confused with the deadly autumn crocus.

The information is based on the Swiss Farmers’ Union season tables and kitchen practice, not on law. A warm April can shift everything by two weeks; the market is always right. The page is available in German, French and English, with no tracking.
