How it works

  1. Open the Saisonkalender. The current month is already selected.
  2. Look under “Vegetables now”, “Fruit and nuts now” and “From storage (regional)”. A star means peak season.
  3. Tap a product and a kitchen tip from the chef appears.

What in season means

It means grown outdoors in the Bern region and the Mittelland. The star marks peak season: that is when a product is cheapest and best. Under “From storage (regional)” you find potatoes, carrots, onions or apples when they come from storage outside their peak season.

Through the year

In spring that includes asparagus, wild garlic and rhubarb, in summer cherries, strawberries and tomatoes, in autumn pumpkin and quinces, in winter lamb's lettuce, leeks and chicory. The tips are practical: tomatoes do not belong in the fridge. Beans are poisonous raw and must be cooked. Wild garlic is best bought at the market, because it can be confused with the deadly autumn crocus.

Where the information comes from

It is based on the seasonal tables of the Swiss Farmers' Union (Schweizer Bauernverband) and on kitchen practice, not on the law. A warm April can shift everything by two weeks. The market is always right.
