What this app does

Benches in Bern: the nearest one, backrest filter

For everyone who needs to sit down on the way: the nearest public bench in Bern on one map, only benches with a backrest if you like. Free, no tracking.

Bern benches shows you the city’s public benches on a map and finds the one closest to you. The app is meant for everyone who needs to sit down along the way: if you are 80, pregnant, injured or in pain, you often plan your route by the benches. An ordinary map does not answer the question “where can I sit next?”.

The data comes from OpenStreetMap. The map distinguishes “Bench with backrest”, “Bench without backrest” and simply “Bench” when OpenStreetMap does not record whether there is a backrest. Where known, the bench’s pop-up also shows the material, for example wood or stone, or that the bench is covered.

Tap “Nearest bench”: the app asks for your location, marks the nearest bench and calculates the walking route with the walking time in minutes, otherwise it shows the straight-line distance. “Route” opens the way in Google Maps, “Route in OSM” in OpenStreetMap. With the filters at the top you can hide individual types, for example all benches without a backrest if you need one.

Any bench without a name can be given one of 2 to 40 characters via “Name this bench”, which is then visible to everyone. There is no tracking: only the routing service gets your location, for the walking route. If a bench in Bern is missing or something is wrong, it can be fixed directly in OpenStreetMap.
