    What this app does

Aare temperature in Bern live, station 2135

The Aare in Bern: water temperature, flow and swimming advice live, official data from the FOEN (station 2135). Free, no tracking.

This page shows how warm the Aare in Bern is right now and how much water it is carrying. At the top you see the water temperature in degrees Celsius and the flow in cubic metres per second, plus the water level in metres above sea level and, when available, the current air temperature. A curve shows the water temperature over the last 48 hours. The values are reloaded every ten minutes.

The readings come from the FOEN gauging station Bern Schönau (Hydrology, station 2135) and are delivered via LINDAS (ld.admin.ch). Air temperature and history come from MeteoSwiss and the FOEN, collected every 15 minutes. The advice is based on guide values from the official scales of the data source; the FOEN flood danger level is shown as well.

Two indicators help you decide. The temperature is rated “Cold, stay short” (below 16 °C), “Fresh” or “Pleasant”. For the flow the page shows “Flow below guide value”, “Flow near guide value” or “Flow above guide value: do not swim”; the guide value is 220 m³/s. This is not a go-ahead: the Aare is only for strong, experienced swimmers, and without a current value the page gives no assessment. A coloured scale from 0 to 500 m³/s shows where the current value lies.

Under “Before you get in” you will find the key rules: never swim alone, know your exit before you go in (there are stairs at Marzili, Lorraine and Eichholz), no inflatables and no alcohol, no jumping from bridges. In a thunderstorm, flood or brown water: get out and walk back. The page is available in German, French and English, with no cookies and no tracking.
