This page collects ways to learn German for free or cheaply in Bern, each with an address or contact, a source and the date the information was checked. The offers are sorted into three groups: “Free”, “Low-cost courses and language cafés” and “Help with the cost”.

Under “Free” you will find Bern Integral Plus, where volunteers teach German from literacy level up to B2, and denk:mal, the Autonome Schule, with low-threshold courses and no registration. The low-cost offers include isa with German, literacy and conversation courses from A1 to B1, “German practice with childcare” at the Ref. Kirchgemeinde Paulus (Reformed parish) and the cantonal course finder, the canton’s search engine for German courses in the migration sector.

There are two kinds of help with the cost: the city’s DeutschBon, vouchers for German courses that can be redeemed at 13 language schools, and the KulturLegi Canton of Bern, which gives people on a small budget access to discounted courses. You apply for the KulturLegi at Caritas.

The recommended first step: open the canton’s course finder and choose your level and district. If you cannot afford a course, go straight to Bern Integral Plus or get the DeutschBon.
