The Aare now: temperature and flow before your swim

Before you get into the Aare, it is worth checking two numbers: how warm the water is and how much of it is flowing. This page shows both, updated every ten minutes.

How it works

  1. Open the page: water temperature, flow and water level are at the top.
  2. Read the two notes on temperature and flow.
  3. Read “Before you go in” and know your exit point before you get into the water.

What the numbers mean

The temperature is rated as “Cold, keep it short” (below 16 °C), “Fresh” or “Pleasant”. For the flow, it says “Flow below guide value”, “Flow near guide value” or “Flow above guide value: do not swim”. The guide value is 220 m³/s. This is not a go-ahead: the Aare is only for strong, experienced swimmers.

A coloured scale from 0 to 500 m³/s shows where the current value is, a curve the water temperature over the last 48 hours. The notes are based on guide values. The flood danger level from the FOEN (BAFU) is shown as well.

Before you go in

Never swim alone and know your exit point beforehand. There are steps at the Marzili, the Lorraine and the Eichholz. Nothing inflatable, no alcohol, no jumping from bridges. In a thunderstorm, flood or brown water: get out and walk back. In an emergency: 144 ambulance, 117 police, 1414 Rega.

Where does the data come from?

From the FOEN measuring station Bern Schönau (station 2135), via LINDAS (ld.admin.ch). Air temperature and history come from MeteoSwiss and the FOEN. No cookies and no tracking.
