Swap books: the open bookcases in Bern

Take a book, leave another one, with no library card and no money. Bücherschränke Bern shows you where the open bookcases are in the city.

How it works

  1. Tap “Nearest bookcase” (Nächster Bücherschrank). The app shows the distance and the walking route with walking time.
  2. Tap the point to see the name, operator and opening hours, if they are recorded.
  3. “Route” opens the directions, “Hide route” (Route ausblenden) clears the map again.

Where are the bookcases?

Every point on the map is an open bookcase. For many of them, the Kornhausbibliotheken are listed as the operator. For example, you will find the Parkbibliothek by the Historisches Museum, the Bücherstall of the Thomaskirche and the Offener Bücherschrank Kulturpromille PHBern.

Check before you go

Some bookcases are closed in winter; the point says so. So tap it before you set off with a bag full of books.

Where does the data come from?

From OpenStreetMap (ODbL). No tracking: only the routing service gets your location, and only the start and end of the walk. If a bookcase is missing or a detail is wrong, correct it directly in OpenStreetMap.
