Your birth-year tree: a city tree from the year you were born

Somewhere in Bern there is a tree as old as you. Jahrgangsbaum finds it in the city's tree register.

How it works

  1. Enter your year of birth and tap “Show me my tree” (Zeig mir meinen Baum).
  2. Read the tree species, the neighbourhood and how many winters the tree has already survived. “Another one” (Einen anderen) shows a different one.
  3. “Show on map” (Auf der Karte zeigen) finds the location, “Download poster (PNG)” (Plakat herunterladen) saves a poster.

What you find out

The city of Bern plants trees every year, and its tree register (Baumkataster) records the year of planting. Jahrgangsbaum finds you a tree from your year of birth. You see the tree species with its Latin name, the approximate neighbourhood and how many winters it has already survived. Plus two numbers: how many trees from that year are in the register and how many trees of this species there are in the city. The register includes, for example, Norway maple, small-leaved lime, English oak or sweet chestnut, in neighbourhoods such as Holligen, Bümpliz or Marzili.

The poster

The poster is 1080 × 1350 and fits Instagram or the kitchen wall. “Copy text” (Text kopieren) copies a short description of your tree.

Where the data comes from

From the geodata of the city of Bern (Baumkataster, Stadtgrün Bern). The location is without guarantee, the planting year of old trees is estimated, and the neighbourhood is derived from the location. If there is no tree in the register for your year, the app takes one from a nearby year. Your birth year stays on your device.
