Birth-year tree finds a city tree in Bern that was planted in the same year you were born. The city plants trees every year, and its tree register records the planting year. The data comes from the City of Bern’s geodata (tree register, Stadtgrün Bern).
Enter your year of birth and tap “Show me my tree”. You see the species with its Latin name, the approximate neighbourhood and how many winters the tree has already come through. There are also two figures: how many trees from that year are in the register and how many trees of that species stand in the city. “Another one” shows you a further tree from your year. If there is no tree from your year in the register, the app takes one from a nearby year.
“Show on map” opens the location in OpenStreetMap, “Copy text” copies a short description, and “Download poster (PNG)” saves a 1080 × 1350 poster that fits Instagram or the kitchen wall. The page is available in German, French, English and Bernese German.
The register includes species such as Norway maple, small-leaved lime, English oak and sweet chestnut, in neighbourhoods such as Holligen, Bümpliz and Marzili. The location comes without guarantee, the planting year of old trees is estimated, and the neighbourhood is derived from the location. Your birth year stays on the device.
